Richard,
I'll give my view from someone who tried to co-ordinate the leagues this year. The league format we decided on at league start took around 2 weeks for me to compile fixtures efficiently and publish with the individual club secretaries. It was hard work - but once it was done it was a low maintenance job to keep it ticking over. I do genuinely fear increasing that overhead in fixture generation, and doing that more than once per season brings me out in a cold sweat.
I also think this will increase the overhead for clubs in new fixtures having to be arranged throughout the season. We only had 3-4 occasions this season of fixtures not being played - given the number of games played that's not bad. I fear this will increase if teams have to re-organise their fixture calendars during the season.
On the subject of being more competitive in matches, I can only really give my experience from the games I played in. I think I played better volleyball from playing more fixtures against better opposition. As the league fixture secretary I did see the scoresheet from every game played. I was also pleased to see 2-1 results rather than 3-0, as that tells me a game was played competitively until the last point was scored - and there was a pleasing number of 2-1 results to report. Some genuine surprises in the Premier league too.
Saying that - this is all my opinion, and you have raised a valid question. I think its something which needs to be discussed and agreed at a WVA meeting attended by all clubs. I will of course support with whatever structure the league decides, but I would have to reconsider my current duties as league secretary if I believed the overheads would increase too much for me personally.
As we haven't got together formally this season, we should probably make the effort to have such a meeting to round of the season and look forward to the next one. My suggestion would be about halfway through the closed season.
Any volunteers to propose a date/time/venue?
