5 EXECUTIVE OFFICERS REPORTS
a. Richard
Morten welcomed the members to the meeting and explained he would be
temporary Chair for the meeting only. He stressed the importance of the
meeting as no meeting had been held for nearly two years and people
would be resigning from their current positions. He thanked all the
officers for their valued work over the past two years.
b Mixed League Secretary (Paul Goddard).
Paul gave a comprehensive report (see below). The 2009/2010 League
tables are at Annex A. Paul was thanked by all for his hard work over
the past two or three years, and a special mention was given to the
support from Sabrina Goddard.
Two leagues run this year, all games were completed successfully.
Olympiad B chose to withdraw from the league just prior to the league
starting which lead to fixtures having to be revised late in the day, so
please can teams only enter teams that they are certain can fulfil the
fixtures throughout the season.
Generally the league ran well this season but I did feel some of the
pressure myself of not having a regular WVA forum to present
league/result issues along with added responsibility which would have
been alleviated by the presence of a WVA chairman. I feel I had to take
on decisions myself based on only my perception of events in order to
keep the league running, something which I feel needs to be corrected
going forward.
I feel I must apologise to all the teams in the league as I didn’t
feel I devoted as much time to keeping the leagues as well-oiled and
answering questions as I have done in the previous season. Becoming a
father and changing jobs last year required more of my time than before,
so I am grateful to my wife Sabrina for doing a lot of the leg work for
the league in the second half of the season when it came to verifying
results online and handling a large amount of the paperwork.
Due to these commitments I will not be standing as WVA League Secretary next season.
Season Issues (Mixed League)
|
|
|
|
1. Player Short System for teams in same division
|
|
There is a lack of clarity of how the player short system
seems to work where clubs have two or more teams in the same division.
We had a few instances of players playing for multiple teams when they
weren’t necessarily marked as ‘player short’. The rule does become
ambiguous in this scenario but I do believe that if this was done it was
within ‘the spirit of game’ as no one lodged a formal complaint and no
team gained a significant advantage by this method.
|
|
|
|
ACTION:
The League rules need revising but will keep the current rules for the
coming season, subject to modifications in these minutes. (Cliff Ball,
Richard Howells, Richard Morten)
|
|
|
|
2. Entering results online
|
|
Whilst on the whole the online results system is a huge
step forward to lightening the load for the league secretary, some clubs
were slow to enter results and indeed some still emailed me result
sheets without entering results. I would like to see this mandated at
the start of next season that all results need to be entered online
within 5 days of the match being played, and away teams should verify
the match within 10 days of the match being played.
|
|
|
ACTION:
Home team to enter results on line within 5 days, away team to verify
within 10 days. A league point will be awarded for teams that verify
within the time frames (Richard Howells, all clubs)
|
|
3. Excessive amounts of paperwork
|
Now we have an online results system I am thinking we can
cut down on the amount of paperwork being sent through the post and
filed by the league secretary. More responsibility should be on each
team to enter and verify the match results and therefore I see League
Secretary approval as an occasional activity where discrepancies or
appeals occur. I don’t think there should then be a requirement to send
the scoresheets to the League Secretary thus reducing postage costs and
overheads. Maybe functionality could be added to the website to upload
scanned versions of the scoresheets instead?
|
|
ACTION: It was agreed that a scan of the score sheet will be sent to the League Secretary within 7 days (all clubs)
|
|
4. Unregistered players
|
Thank you to teams who were pro-active when registering
new players. Though I did have a couple of instances where unregistered
players cropped up on scoresheets after the match had been played. I was
more understanding of this at season start but there were some repeat
offenders through the season I put down to poor club management. I took
no further action with this during the season but the guilty clubs know
who they are and should aim to improve this next season.

c Junior Development Officer Boy’s Report (Su Brennand)
Grand Prix
– Boys entered from Calne, Devizes and Melksham. Calne were able to
attend more events this season and hopefully will continue next. Devizes
had more girls than boys this season, but again hopefully more next
season. Melksham won U11, U13 and U14 overall but were beaten by Wessex
in the SW Champs for U14.
Ladies and Juniors – this season I saw quite a few
representatives from most clubs. The clubs were Devizes, Calne, Wootton
Bassett, Salisbury and Melksham. This season this competition was well
supported by junior players and it was good to see them gaining
confidence and experience.
VE Competitions – I believe Wiltshire has an U18 team entry
this season for the boys, I believe they got through the first round but
were beaten in the second. With all the new talent we hope to enter
more age groups next season.
Pre/End Season – Juniors featured in both these tournaments from Devizes, Melksham and I believe other clubs also. Please advise!
Wiltshire League – Juniors were also seen in this season’s fixtures. It was great to see the improvement of play from all players.
Inter regionals – U15s; we had only 2 boys train this season
from Wilts and that was Jordan Norvill and James Wilkins of Melksham.
U17s; we had 3 boys progress from U15s to U17s and they were successful
and played at Kettering. They were George Sayers, Joe waterman and Rob
Cannings all from Devizes club.
UK School Games – I heard that some of the Wilts boys were
chosen for training but I am not aware any have been chosen to represent
England South. Please advise!

e Ladies Development Officer (Sarah Newstead)
Ladies and juniors league 2009/2010 season
The ladies and juniors league fixtures were arranged on single dates
either on a Saturday or Sunday throughout the season. Four league dates
were played (October/November 2009 and February/March 2010). The
Christmas Cup fixture was held in December 2009.
Salisbury, Devizes, Calne, Melksham, Wootton Bassett and players from Bath all attended the majority of fixtures.
The league was very relaxed most of the time and teams were allowed
to borrow players if they were short, this enabled more teams to attend
the fixtures.
The format over the season was timed games, playing sets up to 25
points. 2 points were awarded for each set won and 1 point for leading
an unfinished set. All teams played each other once during each fixture.
Results:
Wootton Bassett won the Christmas cup 27-12 with Bath as the
runners-up. Medals were given out to both teams for this event on 12th December 2009
Salisbury Bluestones won the league on 37 points and Wootton Bassett
were runners-up on 30. Gold and silver medals were given out to the
teams following the final fixture in March 2010.
The Ladies and Junior league is a fantastic way to introduce juniors
in our clubs to a match environment, not only for playing but also for
scoring, refereeing and line judging. It also allows the ladies to play
as a team from their club over a ladies height net! I hope that next
season will be as successful if not more and lots of volleyball
will be played.
I would like to thank every club in the WVA for fielding teams for
the Ladies and Juniors fixtures, and also to Matt who helped me a great
deal with the organisational side of things. If anyone has any comments
or improvement ideas please let myself or Matt know.
ACTION: Ladies contacts to be passed to Sarah. Nil returns are required please (all clubs)

f Competitions Secretary (Wootton Bassett)
There was no Start of Season Tournament this season. The Dave Kinder
Cup was well supported with the Final being played at Christie Miller SC
in Melksham. The winners were Wootton Bassett and runners-up Salisbury.
The End of Season Tournament Shield and Plate were both won by
Salisbury.

6 CLUB REPORTS
Aquae Sulis
Difficult year for the club as we lost 4 regular first team players
at the start of the season which resulted in scaling down to just one
team represented in the WVA League. Led by Bruce Rayton, a new look
Apollos side struggled in the WVA Premier. A lack of club volunteers to
help referee and score some home games plagued us in the latter stages
of the season.
Luckily the club is kept alive by a handful of loyal servants and
despite our high court fees we manage to stay afloat and continue to
enjoy more social volleyball.
However numbers at training has stayed promisingly high throughout
the year so far, and we have had an influx of keen female players which
may (or may not) lead to a more increased presence in the league next
year.
Calne
Calne
Comets had a good season. In the Wiltshire Mixed League our priority
was for our first team to gain promotion back to the Premier Division,
which was achieved. Our junior teams did very well in the SWVA Junior
Grand Prix with our U11 girls winning and our U12 boys runners-up in
their respective competitions.
The
only downside to the season was the resignation of our head coach due
to other commitments. We still have two coaches but they were coaching
the juniors, so we are actively looking for at least one more coach and
have advertised on the Volleyball England web site.
Our
membership numbers are fairly stable. We are seeing up to 30 adults and
30 juniors at training, although attendance is usually in the low
twenties at each session for both groups. In terms of recruitment, we
will be advertising in the local press at the end of August ahead of
returning to training on 3 September.
We are trying to improve our facilities and are in the process of purchasing a referee stand from Devizes Volleyball club.
One of our coaches, Jenny Boorman, as part of National Sports Week has been to both Cherhill Primary and Sheldon schools.
Devizes
· Finished fifth in the SW league, 7th In the SW championships
· In the Wiltshire Mixed league finished 2nd and 5th in Prem and 7th in 1st Division.
· Wiltshire Ladies League finished 3rd
· Wiltshire Cup, lost in Semi-Final, as per the End of Season tournament
Juniors:
· 3 U17 men were selected for the SW regional squad (Joe Waterman, George Sayers, Rob Cannings)
· 4 U16 girls were selected for the SW regional squad (Jodie Amor, Rachel Draper, Robyn Sayers, Amy Godwin)
· 3 U14 girls were selected for the SW regional squad (Yasmin Kaashoek, Ella Ward, Edie Waterman)
· U15 girls got to the Semi-Finals of the National cup
· U17 boys got to the last 8s of the U18s National cup
· U12 girls won the U13 girl SW Grand Prix
Club Overall:
Relocated permanently to Lavington school, training on Thursdays with club link agreement with coaching after school on Fridays.
Working toward renewing our club mark accreditation for 2011 when existing one runs out.
Healthy membership of over 30 players across all age groups, running 5
different adults teams in various competitions across the region.
Club members have voiced there concern about the lack of leadership
within Wiltshire and are well aware that more volunteers are needed. I
am personally worried about the declining amount of teams within the
Wiltshire area that has already seen the Wiltshire Mavericks Men’s team
disappear along with various clubs ‘B’ teams competing in the Wiltshire
League
Melksham
Olympiad
Olympiad club has had a rather unsuccessful season in comparison to
recent years. At the beginning of the season we decided to enter 1 team
as the club struggled to fulfil the second team fixtures the previous
season. The number of registered players have also gone down with only
18 registered players this season in comparison to 22 the previous
season. A few of these players have moved on and so unless something
major happens between now and the start of next season, the club would
only be able to put one team in again. Having only one team this year
has been useful in giving the newer players a taste of a higher level of
game than they would have, but this has also meant that we have not
been able to play our strongest team for the matches. That being said,
the way the league has been run this year and the previous year(s) all
of the team would like to say thank you to all involved and have
thoroughly enjoyed playing in some very close matches.
This last season has seen Tony Sullivan take over as main coach, but
unfortunately he is only able to make about half of the training
sessions due to work commitments. We are hoping he will continue in
this role for the next season and with the hope of getting some new
players, we will be able to take advantage of his experience and improve
on the performance this year.
The club is in it’s summer break which doesn’t mean we stop playing
altogether. Volleyball continues in John Coles Park on a Monday at 7pm
and if anyone fancies playing (as long as it has been dry) they are free
to turn up and play.

a. Matt Stevens requested financial support from

ACTION: The treasurer will reimburse Matt Stevens the cost of NVL entry (Serena Morten)
