2) Minutes of Previous Meeting
a) Everyone accepted the minutes as a true account of the AGM held on 19th June 2012
3) Matters Arising
a) It was discussed that trophies should be returned, engraved by 1st Jan. If the trophy is not returned, then there should be a fine of £20 per trophy. Cliff Ball was to look at changing the rules to cover the loss of trophies but it was decided that with only 1 outstanding trophy, the rules would not be changed.
4) WVA Executive Committee Summary Reports
a) Chair (Cliff Ball) – See WVA Annual Report in Appendix A
b) Vice Chair – As the position is vacant, no report was provided.
c) Secretary (Paul Rainey)
Thanks to everyone for their support of the WVA, without them there wouldn't be such a well organised league and competitions. Thanks go to Sarah Newstead for taking and providing the minutes for the last meeting in my absence. There have been very few issues for the league/ competitions this year which has been a testament to the good team spirit within the association. Hopefully the person doing the minutes for the next season will be able to send the minutes out slightly quicker than I have this year and that next season will be as enjoyable as this season.
d) Treasurer (Serena Morten)
See Appendix B.
It was also mentioned that league entry is £30 per team, £3.50 per player, £2.50 for juniors and £35 for tournaments.
Thanks to the Mortens for their help in sorting out the End of Season Evening.
There are approximately £100 of outstanding cost that are not shown on the report.
In the accounts, the WVA registration fee is for the Mavericks Club affiliation to Volleyball England.
e) Child Welfare (Jenny Boorman)
No incidents were reported or passed onto the SW link.
Once again a reminder that each club should have someone tasked to this role; which includes having to chase Volleyball England (VE) CRB checks!
Safeguarding courses, or any welfare advice is fairly easily obtained from VE, either online or speaking to a real person.
Action – Clubs to clarify and pass on the names of the appointed CWOs for next season to me (or my successor).
Action - Clubs to ensure title of CWO is "CLUB welfare officer" rather than limiting to child welfare officer; this is to enable any welfare concerns to be raised.
Action – Cliff Ball to update the constitution to state Club Welfare Officer.
f) League Secretary (Richard Howells)
Available on request from Richard Howells.
There was a vote of thanks for Richard Howells from John Postance, seconded by Serena Morten for his efforts in running the website and the leagues so well especially with all of the Sunday matches.
Action – League Secretary to amend league tables to have an extra column to show the bonus points (for clarification).
g) Competitions Secretary (Calne VC – Neil Bentley)
Three competitions were organised this season, namely a start-of-season tournament, the Dave Kinder Knock-out Cup and the end-of-season tournament. A presentation evening was held after the end-of-season tournament.
The end-of-season tournament was held on 18 May at the Christie Miller Sports Centre in Melksham. Eight teams entered, which allowed the tournament to split in two separate competitions for the Plate and Shield. The presentation evening was held at the Pilot in Bowerhill. Particular thanks have to go to Richard Morten who arranged the evening and James Morten who organised a draw. Although the number of people attending was lower than hoped, the successful draw ensured that the event broke even.
Eleven teams entered the Knock-out Cup, which was won after four rounds by Devizes 6X, who beat Wootton Bassett Aces in the final at Calne Leisure Centre on 2 June. The attempt to ask the losing semi-finalists to arrange the officials for the final was partially successful, as Olympiad complied while Salisbury ignored the request. This had been a condition of entry.
There was a vote of thanks from Cliff Ball for the effort put in to organising the competitions which was seconded by Richard Morten.
It was suggested that for future seasons that the final for the Dave Kinder Cup should be played prior to the end of season tournament and that the date is set prior to Christmas.
Thanks also went to Richard and James Morten for their help.
h) Junior Girls (Matt Stevens)
Under 15's were joint 3rd in the National Cup.
Under 16's got through round 2.
6 girls played in South West (2 U16 - undefeated, 4 U14 - 1st team 4th, 2nd team 2nd).
2 players from Devizes are playing in the national squad.
Yasmin Kaashoek will be playing for Wessex (Academy) next year.
Congratulations go to Matt Stevens for becoming the assistant coach for the national juniors.
i) Junior Boys (Su Brennand)
Didn't have enough players for the under 16, 17 or 18 teams.
The under 15 team qualified for divisional but couldn't get enough players to play the next round.
6 players were picked for the South West interregionals. Their teams came 3rd/ 4th but this has not been confirmed officially.
Su is resigning as South West manager and also the WVA junior boys development officer.
Arrange a junior session for the last junior tournament and had little response but did manage on the day.
Kelly Jones May organise a date soon for a session.
It was mentioned that juniors as a whole needs organising so that everyone in the area knows about all of the events.
Thanks to Su for all of her hard work from the Chair and everyone.
j) Ladies Development (Sarah Newstead)
Available on request from Sarah Newstead.
Action – Clubs that do not enter as a team, could the player contacts be provided to Sarah Newstead so that they can be informed directly for upcoming competitions.
k) Beach Development (Irwin Aiken)
The beach season has been kicked off.
1/6 saw a junior event which was very successful with teams from Swindon and 1 other team. The juniors have asked for more competitions.
2/6 was the adult king/ queen of the beach pairs. There were 6 players and all played each other. Players were mainly from Royal Wootton Bassett but there was 1 player from Calne and a couple of new players as well. It is a good competition to develop both individual and team skills.
Would like to launch a pairs tournament (30/6?). This would have the format similar to squash leagues where if you have 5 players in a league they would play for 2 - 3 hours and winners would go up a league, losers would go down. This could be done either on sand or on grass. This could be played at different venues around the county (Bath Uni has a sand court if required).
30/6 is the date for a mixed 4's tournament at Coate Water.
Suggested dates for tournaments are:
28/7
26/8
22/9
If players are interested, there is the beach tournament at Croyde 22 - 23/6.
5) Club Round Up
a) Olympiad – Done reasonably well in the league and played well in the Dave Kinder Cup. Did well in the end of season tournament losing by 1 point in the semi final (which was the only game lost all day). In John Coles park at 7 every Monday (as long as the ground is dry) and going back inside after the August bank holiday. Looking to play 1 team in the leagues next season.
b) Wootton Bassett – Training inside, also playing outside at Lydiard Park on Tuesday and Coate Water on Wednesdays. Hopefully have 2 premier league teams and 1 ladies and juniors team.
c) Calne – Good stable numbers for adults and juniors. Playing outside over the summer on a Friday and some at Derry Hill to try and set it up. Looking to play 3 teams plus 1 ladies and juniors.
d) Melksham – Currently there are 12 - 15 seniors. There were a few more but they have changed to playing NVL. Finish training for this season but looking at 1 team in the league next season with matches on Tuesdays. Currently looking at a new venue as Christie Miller Hall is closing.
e) Salisbury - Have had their AGM with 30 people. Training is on a Thursday 7 - 10 and are looking to get a new coach. Matches on Sundays but playing is limited by school holidays and exams. Should have 3 mixed league teams, 2 ladies and juniors and 1 Dave Kinder Cup team. The club is involved in schools during term time and plays outside on a Thursday through the summer.
f) Devizes – The numbers are looking good in the club and should have 2 teams playing next season. The club has gained 2 new players but have lost 3 ladies. Training has finished inside but are playing outside on Thursdays.
g) Erlestoke - Looking to put 1 team in next season.
h) Trowbridge – Hoping to put a team in next season.
i) Corsham - Training is on a Wednesday but currently there are only 8 (max) turning up. Not enough players to put a team in next season in the mixed league but there could be a team for ladies and juniors.
j) Mavericks (Mens) – Looking to put a team in South West next season.
The NVL team have decided not to be promoted to Div 2 this year due to the extra commitment and cost in order to play up to 18 single header matches in the year.
Instead the team wishes to play NVL Div 3.
With a squad of approximately 9-10 players the team hopes to train with the South West team every two weeks during the season.
Matches to be played at Lavington school
Training venue still not decided as Corsham now cannot take us.
Team will be sponsored by TeamHaven and aim is for players to pay for matches and training sessions when they attend.
Thanks go to James, Matt and Steve for organising the teams for this year.
k) Maverick (Ladies) No Maverick team but 6-7 from Devizes are playing for Team Bath and Wootton Basset have a ladies team as well.

f) Matt Stevens - Raised the issue that the names and contact details of juniors (if approved) would be passed to the ladies development officer to allow information regarding fixture to be sent directly rather than just to one person in the club who may or may not pass on the info to all.
g) Olivier Burois - Requested information on when outdoor volleyball is being played.
h) Cliff Bal - Informed those present that he had sent information out regarding the South West AGM.
People were thanked for attending the AGM. Meeting adjourned 21:40

Wiltshire Volleyball Association - Annual Report 2012/13 Season
The Wiltshire Volleyball Association (WVA) has had another busy season with a full programme of league fixtures and tournaments throughout the season. The WVA Committee mirrored that of last season with all positions filled, although our Vice Chair resigned during the season due to personal reasons. A total of five WVA committee meetings are held during the season including the AGM, which is scheduled for 12th June 2013.
This WVA League had 13 teams this season, the same as the previous, with 6 teams playing in the Premier Division and 7 teams in Division 1. The Premier Division was won convincingly by Devizes 6X winning all their matches and Wootton Bassett Aces taking the runners-up slot, a reversal of last season; Melksham were relegated. The First Division champion was Wootton Bassett Bees after finishing runners-up for the past 2 seasons. A play-off match between Salisbury Druids, who finished second from bottom team in the Premier Division, and Salisbury Pagans is due to be played soon will decide who plays in the Premier Division next season. We are looking to increase the league teams 14 teams next season with a team from Trowbridge on the verge of joining the league.
The Ladies & Juniors League (L & J) had 7 teams playing on a semi-regular basis in a tournament format. The fixtures were well attended with players of various skills levels participating. The winner of the L & J League was won by Devizes A with Salisbury as runners-up, again a reversal of fortunes over last season. The Christmas Cup was dominated by the young Devizes team again with Swindon Ridgeway Mavericks (coached by Kelly Jones’) claiming the runner-up spot. Finally, the L & J Finale Tournament was won by a young Calne team with Devizes a close second.
The season’s competitions commenced with the Pre-Season Tournament in September with a hastily assembled ‘Rest of Wiltshire’ team winning the Cup and Melksham as runners-up. The Plate winners were Wootton Bassett Bees with Calne in second spot. The Dave Kinder KO Cup was also played throughout the season, with the final to be played on 2nd June between Devizes 6X and Wootton Bassett Aces. The End of Season Tournament was played on Sat 18th May with Devizes 6X beating Wootton Bassett Aces in the Shield competition. Trowbridge’s new team won the Plate with Melksham runners-up. This was followed by a successful Presentation evening where the season’s trophy haul was presented – mainly to Devizes it would seem, so well done to them.
South West League representation came from Wootton Bassett Ladies, coached by Phil Heads. The Wiltshire Mavericks Men's team, coached by Steve Grimes, performed well in its first season back in the National League coming runners-up in NVL Div 3 south and gaining promotion, albeit the team decided to decline the promotion and slave it out in Div 3 again next season, due to the additional commitment and costs required in Div 2. A men’s team also played in the South West League, managed and coached by James Morten. Devizes men entered a strong young team into the South West Championship again and Wootton Bassett again entered the ladies’ competition.
On the 'Junior' front Wiltshire has a keen interest with Calne, Melksham, Devizes, Swindon, Wootton Bassett and Salisbury producing boys and girls teams. Considerable effort is put into this key area and it has produced results again with Yasmin Kaashoek being selected for the England Cadet scheme and other juniors representing the regional teams.
There is a full programme of beach and outdoor activities this season being organised for the county and locally. Salisbury is also hosting its very popular weekend outdoor tournament in August, with teams coming from around the county and beyond. In summary the WVA is in a comfortable position at present, and thanks go to all the volunteers on the WVA committee and club committees, without whom it would not be possible to run everything smoothly.
